Illinois soybean farmers continue to champion the growth of overseas markets for U.S. soy. That includes leveraging the soybean checkoff alongside projects of the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) program. Illinois growers are playing a vital role in fostering international demand for soy protein.
Funded by the USDA’s Food for Progress Program, CAST aims to accelerate the production of high-demand fish species in Cambodia, laying the groundwork for a sustainable aquaculture industry that incorporates soy protein in feed. CAST established the Cambodian Aquaculturist Association (CAA) to serve as a sustainable vehicle for aquaculture production in the country. It could, in turn, help bolster future trade for U.S. soy. CAA now boasts more than 1,100 members, including fish farmers, wholesalers, feed millers and distributors.
The Illinois Soybean Association (ISA) has been instrumental in supporting CAA’s growth and impact. Thanks to ISA’s backing, CAA has expanded to reach four additional provinces in the country. Its total presence in providences now stands at 10. This expansion means the benefits of soy-based fish feed will reach more Cambodians and could lead to an increased preference of U.S. soy.
This partnership with WISHH highlights ISA’s commitment to building long-term markets for U.S. soy. WISHH, a program of the American Soybean Association, marks its 25th anniversary this year building new markets for U.S. soy.
