CHICAGO, IL – AUGUST 15, 2024 – On Tuesday, U.S. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky visited the Phoenix Bean Tofu Plant in Chicago to discuss the critical role of Illinois soybean production in the food processing industry. The visit was hosted by Phoenix Bean Owner & President Jenny Yang, with the Illinois Soybean Association (ISA) participating in the discussion.
The conversation focused on the importance of locally sourced soybeans in sustaining Illinois’ agriculture and food processing sectors. The meeting underscores the interconnectedness between local soybean farmers, food producers and the broader economic impact on the region.
“As a vegetarian, there is a special place in my heart for soybeans! Soybeans are a key source of nutrition, a renewable resource, and a crucial ingredient in so many products, including tofu,” said Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky. “I had a fantastic visit to the Phoenix Bean Tofu Plant, and I commend Jenny Yang for her tremendous work and leadership. Illinois is a leading exporter of soybeans, and I will continue to do all I can to support our farmers and food producers.”
“It was wonderful to have Congresswoman Schakowsky visit with the Illinois Soybean Association to discuss the Phoenix Bean tofu making process, from soybean farmers growing phenomenal beans to our consumers,” said Jenny Yang, President and Owner of Phoenix Bean. “We are fortunate that she immediately understood the integral role that our small business plays in creating value-added tofu products from IL-grown soybeans for all to enjoy.”
The visit highlighted the crucial role that soybean production plays in reducing the carbon footprint of the food lifecycle and maximizing the economic impact of the agricultural supply chain. Phoenix Bean relies heavily on locally sourced soybeans, making this discussion particularly relevant for the future of sustainable and locally driven food production. “On behalf of the Illinois Soybean Association, we express our appreciation to Representative Schakowsky for dedicating time to support our state’s largest industry, and Jenny Yang at Pheonix Bean for hosting us,” said Director of Government Relations Andrew Larson. “As the nation’s top soybean producer, Illinois is home to 43,000 family-owned soybean farms. Additionally, Chicago’s food and beverage manufacturing industry, powered by our state’s farmers, generates nearly $10 billion annually and employs over 66,000 people.”
