On August 15, Illinois soybean farmers had the opportunity to discuss key agricultural concerns with Congressman Mike Bost during his visit to the farm of Illinois Soybean Association (ISA) Vice Chairman Brad Daugherty. Congressman Bost, who represents a district that produces over 167 million bushels of soybeans annually, plays a significant role on the House Agriculture Committee, making his support essential for forming farm policy.

Why It’s Important:

From crop insurance to rural development, the Farm Bill plays a key role in the future of agriculture in Illinois. Farmers like Brad Daugherty depend on stable policies that offer both short-term and long-term support. Congressman Bost’s visit showed why direct connections between lawmakers and farmers are vital, ensuring that the Farm Bill addresses the unique needs of rural communities.
During the visit, we also discussed the growing concern of low-loss ratios for both corn and soybean farmers in Illinois. Addressing this issue is critical because low-loss ratios, which measure the payouts of crop insurance relative to the premiums, can affect the viability of the insurance programs that many farmers rely on for protection against unpredictable weather and market conditions. Ensuring that loss ratios are managed effectively is key to maintaining a safety net for farmers.

Government Relations & Legislative Focus:

ISA representatives used this visit to inform Congressman Bost about the importance of a Farm Bill that focuses on the needs of rural communities and individual farmers. Government relations efforts focused on discussing provisions for crop insurance, rural development programs, and ways to foster innovation in farming practices. As a member of the House Agriculture
Committee, Congressman Bost emphasized his commitment to ensuring that Illinois soybean farmers have a strong voice in Washington D.C. and their concerns are heard and seen in future legislation.
